Farewell, Sweetpea

Today we put our beloved Paso Fino Mare, Sweetpea, to rest. She was a faithful sweet girl whom we loved with all our hearts. She will be missed. Rest well, old girl.
She came from Mississippi where she was one of many horses flooded out by Katrina. We bought her from the Arcadia Auction in 2008. She was thin and had a very deep saddle sore on her back. There was no light in her eyes. They were dull with hopelessness.
When Peg gave her some hay in the trailer, the first glimmer of life showed in her eyes. You wouldn't have recognized the little spitfire she became as she healed, physically and mentally. She had personality plus and was sweet and loving. There was always a gratefulness about her.
I truly believe when you rescue an animal, you save a piece of yourself as well.

Back on the Estrone
Cody is back on the Estrone for another four weeks. I'm working him every day (skipping one here and there) for 20 to 40 minutes at a brisk walk. He'll go down the road by himself with no problem but he gets very ansy when we get down toward the end. So I turn before we get that far then make several trips back and forth.
If this doesn't work, we're looking at surgery. The vet wants to hold off on surgery as he might end up with arthritis in that joint from the surgery. It's been such a long battle and he is so uncomfortable that seriously, I think it's time. We'll give the estrone and work three more weeks though.
